Simultaneous tipping of the skis results in parallel tracks in the snow.
Back in the 70's, we often lifted the inside ski off the snow - fun, but not efficiently using the equipment.
These are high-speed turns done in a tuck position. The object is to keep your body moving down the hill in a straight line while the skis are tipped on edge and move out away from the body, then back under the body to the other side.
Moving at a good clip here. Note that these turns require most of the trail width, and my skis remain parallel throughout the run, tipping at the same time (railroad tracks).
Few skiers use their poles properly. They are mostly used as a timing device but "pole plant" may not be the best term for it. Pole touch is more accurate. Note that the outside (downhill) hand is involved, and the pole is touched by a mere flick of the wrist with little arm movement. The hand, after the touch, remains in front of the body. Otherwise, you ski past your pole and find yourself sitting back.
At Bolton Valley, VT there are some fun trails that are skinny and "woodsy". I had never been on this trail before and you'll see me picking my way down, trying to avoid some rocks and icy patches, stemming my skis in places, sliding here and there, trying not to kill myself! But getting off the crowded, wide slopes is a fun challenge and gets you closer to nature.
This drill calls for sliding straight down the fall line in a fixed corridor while the skis rotate simultaneously under the skier's stable upper body. A "windshield wiper" effect is the desired outcome.
A drill with three parts: three skating steps (where one ski is lifted off the snow) followed by three shaped turns (with both skis on the snow) and finished with three short-radius turns and a hockey stop.
Here, I am leading two skiers through a bump field. The focus is on speed control, using not only the bumps themselves, but also the shape of our turns to control speed.
Same idea here - using the bumps themselves for speed control.
